Low Vision Services

Blind/Physically Handicapped

The National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped (BPH) is a federal- and state-supported program. It supplies recorded and Braille books and magazines to persons who cannot use standard print materials because of a visual or physical limitation. Also available are popular movies on video with extra narration for the visually impaired.

If you are accepted into the BPH program, a special cassette player will be mailed to you. It can play only BPH recorded materials. You can request specific titles, or you can ask to have titles selected for you in your areas of interest. These items will be mailed to you in a container that you later use to return them. You can keep the recorded materials for six weeks. There are no postage fees.

Lombard residents can obtain applications for the BPH program at the Helen Plum Library (630-627-0316), or can call to request an application from the Voices of Vision Talking Books Center, Geneva, IL, at 1-800-227-0625. In most cases, eligibility must be certified by a health or social services professional. There is no charge for the program.

Homebound Services

Are you homebound? Are you unable to get to the library?

Lombard Residents of any age confined to their home, either permanently or temporarily, may receive Homebound Delivery Services.

Your library card gives you complete access to books (new releases and old favorites), large print books, books on tape or CD, and even DVDs.

All materials are delivered to your door and picked up again when they are due. Your personal volunteer can help you make selections.

If you or someone you know could use this service please contact:

Karen Kee at Helen Plum Library 630-627-0316

Susan Wood at Tri-Town YMCA 630-629-9622

This is a free service sponsored by the Helen M. Plum Memorial Library and the TriTown YMCA.

Low Vision Services

The Helen M. Plum Memorial Library has quite a few resources for individuals with vision problems. Please ask the Adult Services Department about our:

  • Vantage Magnifier - designed to enable people with low vision to read and write independently.
  • Online Catalog with Enlarged Text – allows low vision patrons to view which items the library owns as well as what they have checked out.
  • Big Print Computer – an enlarged text computer with access to the Internet, Excel, Microsoft Word and Microsoft Access.
  • Large Print Books - Our collection of approximately 2500 books is made up of many of your favorite contemporary and classic authors. Books are ordered six times a year. For lists of new and upcoming books, see Adult Services.
