REORGANIZATION PROJECT. November 12, 2009
The Library Board of Trustees is using money from reserves to accomplish a reorganization of the existing interior space. A list of the projects follows. Some have been completed, or are essentially completed.
The project is expected to be completed around the end of 2009.
We are working with owner’s representative Phil Wade of Morris-Wade Associates.

2 nd floor
1. Convert the Board Room into a multi-purpose room. IN PROCESS
- Removed the existing board table and chairs, including armless easy chairs, and replaced them with new lightweight moveable tables and new chairs.
- Removed existing wall display case, credenza and wall shelving to maximize space usage.
- Repainted walls and replace carpet.
2. Move Technical Processing into the Training Room. COMPLETED
- Removed interior wall separating old I.T. office from Training Room.
- Moved hallway door and wall to new hallway location, for security.
- Installed new cabinets, wall shelving and workstations.
- Installed electrical outlets, phone and data cabling.
- Painted and carpeted the room and adjoining hallway.
3. Transform existing Technical Processing Dept. into a reading area. IN PROCESS
- Convert existing supply room to small conference room, with windows on the south and east walls, a new drop ceiling, additional air supply and return, minor cabinetry work, and new carpet and paint.
- Relocate existing supply closet to new location. COMPLETE
- Demolish existing built in workstations, counter, and sink, and remove wall shelving. Preserve existing cabling for possible future use. COMPLETE
- Install new shelving for magazines and newspapers. ON ORDER
- Provide new reader chairs and single-use tables. ON ORDER
- Install surveillance cameras.
- Put a local alarm on the door to the plaza roof deck.
- Provide self-serve coffee for patrons.
- Carpet and paint second floor area. ON ORDER

4. Upgrade the Circulation Desk area. IN PROCESS
- Replace the front desk in same location, including space for library card registration. NEW DESK ON ORDER
- Create openings in wall to workroom for new book drops.
- Relocate shopping basket storage.
- Eliminate information desk. COMPLETE
- Eliminate patron registration card file. COMPLETE
- Relocate “reserves” shelving from work room to public area on a new bookcase, to provide direct patron access to reserve materials. SHELVING ON ORDER
- Move children’s DVDs into the new teen area.
- Move one range of adult popular paperbacks from west of the entrance to new Teen Area.
- Replace two low bookcases of adult popular paperbacks with two taller bookcases. ON ORDER
- Install self-checkout unit by front door. COMPLETE
- Move the phone console to the workroom. COMPLETE
- Eliminate card catalog cabinets that contain printed date due cards from east wall. Change system to that of printed date due slips. COMPLETE
- Add interlibrary loan desk and shelving, and workstation to work room. ON ORDER
- Upgrade theft detection system gates.
- Replace reserves shelf in workroom with table for pages’ work.
- Add modern ceiling task lighting over Circulation desk.
- Recarpet and paint the area.
5. Convert the previous adult magazine area to a combined teen and children’s area.
- Move adult DVD cabinets to new adult media area.
- Remove and reuse, or sell, existing shelving, reader tables and coffee tables. COFFEE TABLES AND LOUNGE SEATING REMOVED
- Move in existing browser units housing Youth Services DVDs.
- Reconfigure existing wall periodical shelving for children’s magazines, with a counter top. Move children’s magazines from Youth Services to this area. ON ORDER
- Add a wall bulletin board. ON ORDER
- Move wall shelving from west wall of Adult Services to east wall of Teen Area, with new end panels and canopy tops. END PANELS AND TOPS ON ORDER
- Reuse one adult paperback bookcase from lobby for teen books, with new end panels and canopy tops. END PANELS AND TOPS ON ORDER
- Add one free standing range of bookshelves for teen books. ON ORDER
- Include additional electrical outlets for computer use.
- Provide new “teen friendly” tables and chairs, and additional computers. ON ORDER
6. Convert old adult quiet area at west end of Adult Services to adult media area
- Remove existing study carrels.
- Relocate existing north wall shelving (videotapes) to west wall for media.
- Add a second musical CD browser unit to match existing.
- Move existing DVD display units and microfilm cabinets to this area.
- Convert two of the typing rooms to one large alcove for two microfilm machines, and relocate microfilm machines to alcove.
- Cable microfilm machines to local area network for printing and emailing.
- Convert third typing room to a local history room with wall shelving.
- Eliminate pamphlet collection, use some files for office storage.
7. Convert the existing adult periodical storage room to Adult Services office space.
- Install exterior windows on the west wall.
- Move microfilm cabinets to Adult Services area.
- Cable for computers, and provide additional electrical and phone service.
- Buy workstations, chairs, shelving, tables, and additional computers.
- Repair walls, and carpet and paint.
8. General.
- Air condition the computer server room
- Install a handrail by the front entrance. COMPLETE
- Install a second stall in the second floor women’s room. COMPLETE
- Upgrade all building signage
The current reorganization project was based on a larger reorganization project that was proposed in 2007. Although plans are not currently in place to implement that larger plan, you can see the report here.
