Where does Hammerschmidt School get its name? Why does Lombard have so many old brick buildings?   The answer is a man named William Hammerschmidt.  In 1878, Hammerschmidt moved to Lombard from Naperville.  He built a brick and tile factory.  The bricks from that factory were used to build many of the homes and stores in Lombard.

Hammerschmidt Elementary School now sits where the factory used to be.
