Did you know that Young People's Services has a wide variety of games, videos and other non-book materials available for check-out? Ask our staff to guide you to our special collections described below.
 

Lap Totes:
"Storytime in a Bag"

Lap Totes are themed bags that contain books,a flannel story, puzzle, music, and a puppet. They are appropriate for use with an adult caregiver and a child. Themes include: bedtime, cats, dogs, trains, and the zoo. To see a list of our lap totes click here.

 

 

Learning Games:
"A Collection of Educational Games and Toys"

Emphasis is on games and materials promoting skills in reading and math concepts, science, music, critical thinking, fine and gross motor skills, and games based on children's literature. To browse through our collection of learning games click here.

 

  Puzzles
Next time you're in the library be sure to check out the wide variety of puzzles in the Young People's collection. We offer a variety of basic wooden puzzles, multi-layer and magnetic puzzles! There is a nice collection for a variety of skill levels.
 

Puppets
Lions, tigers, and bears, oh my! Our puppet collection contains a variety of animals, creatures, people and storybook characters. Come look through our collection and open your mind to the creative and imaginative play inspired by puppetry.

 

  CD-ROM's:
"Computer Software Programs"

The Young People's Services department has educational software for toddlers through 8th grade. Examples include: Jumpstart Toddler, Buzz Lightyear 2nd Grade, Clue Finders 3rd Grade, Reading Blaster Ages 9 - 12, Sim Safari, and Sid Meier's Civilization 3. The collection supports both Windows and Macintosh platforms.
 

 

Compact Discs
Browse through the CD collection in Young People's Services. We have children's music, action and movement CDs, classical and multicultural music, and much more!
  Audio Books
(on Tape, Compact Disc, and Read - Alongs)

Looking for something to do in the car on a long road trip? We have a wide variety of titles on audiotapes and cds as well as books with cassettes. No matter what your age or reading level you are sure to find a story that is just right for you.
 

Videos and DVDs
The library offers a wide variety of educational and popular videos and DVDs for children. From Disney films to potty training, we have the titles to meet your entertainment and educational needs.

 

 

Family Computer
Our "Family Computer" station has several pre-loaded computer games which patrons may play while visiting the library. Reserved time slots are for 30 minutes per family. Sign up in Young People's Services or call (630) 627-0136 for more information.

 

 
Word Processing
Patrons may sign up to use the Word Processing computer in Young People's Services. We offer Microsoft Word, Microsoft WordPerfect, and Microsoft Excel. There is a printing cost of 10¢ per page.

 

Books
Picture Books, Easy Fiction and Easy Readers, Board Books

Picture Books and Easy Fiction books are great for reading aloud to children up to second grade. These books have simple plots and rely heavily on illustrations. Easy Readers are books for children who are just beginning to read. The levels vary from beginning readers who may recognize a few words up to children just beginning to read chapter books. Board books are books for children from birth to preschool. Published in a sturdier format, they stand up longer to wear and tear.

 

Fiction

Young People's Services has a diverse collection of fiction novels appropriate for grades 3 through 8 as well as Young Adult titles. We have popular titles such as the Harry Potter books, children's classics, contemporary titles, and paperbacks. Our wide collection contains all the popular genres — science fiction and fantasy, mystery, sports, horror, and realistic fiction. Fiction books are often available in both hardcover and paperback. In addition, several titles are also available in large print format for patrons with low vision.

 

Nonfiction

Nonfiction books contain true or factual information. Here is a breakdown of the Dewey Decimal classification in our library.

• 000-UFOs, monsters, enyclopedias, almanacs, and computer information.
•100-Philosophy, psychology, supernatural and paranormal
•200-Religion and mythology
•300-Social Sciences: law, education, customs, everyday life,  folklore, fairy tales, and Mother Goose rhymes.
•400-Languages, grammar, dictionaries, and sign language
•500-Sciences: mathematics,the planets and solar system, chemistry, rocks and minerals, dinosaurs, plants, and animals
•600-Applied Sciences: technology, medicine, engineering, planes, trains, ships, pets, cookbooks
•700-The Arts: architecture, painting, music, dancing, drawing books, graphic novels, games, movies, and sports
•800-Literature: poetry, plays, literary novels
•900-Geography, collective biographies and history

•Biographies are located at the end of the nonfiction collection. Titles are listed in order of the last name of the person that the title is about. Ex: all of the Abraham Lincoln books are under J or Y Biog Lin.

Parent / Teacher Collection
This is a collection of books of interest to parents and teachers. Subjects of books include: child development, child rearing, learning disabilities, storytime ideas, and school curriculum.

 

Periodicals

Young People's Services has a variety of periodical titles appropriate for children in preschool through 8th grade. We also offer titles geared specifically for parents and teachers. Topics include: games and hobbies, special interest, crafts, science and nature, history, and sports.

 

Reference Books and Databases

The library has a variety of reference materials on different topics that may be of use to patrons. These materials may not be checked out but may be used while visiting the library. Ask at Young People's Services and one of the librarians will be happy to help you locate these items. We also have reference databases such as Infotrac Web or LitFinder preloaded onto specific computers that patrons may use. There is a printing charge of 10¢ per page for the computers.
